Apart from these Thai visa-free and visa-on-arrival countries, there are an additional 150 destinations that Thai passport holders either need a physical visa or an eVisa to enter (i.e. visa-required countries).

The history of Thai passports dates back to the late 19th century. Where passports were issued for the first time during the reign of Chulalongkorn for the passage of travelers. The first passport regulations in Thailand were established in 1917 to ensure the country’s security during the First World War. A Thai passport booklet was first introduced in 1939 in Thai and French, which was changed to Thai and English in 1977. The first machine-readable Thai passports were introduced in 1993, and in August 2005, Thailand became only the second country in the world and in Asia (after Malaysia) to introduce biometric passports. In 2019, the validity of the Thai passport increased from 5 years to 10 years.

The third-generation passport, due to be released in mid-2020, will have an iris scan ID and will be valid for 10 years. The number of offices available for passport application has increased from 319 to 500.

You should check with a foreigner’s office what options you have to extend your stay.
